Hooray for democracy! Its so refreshing to have an election where there is a clear victor, even better is when that victor is the right person for the job. Well of the choices that were left anyway, I still am an avid Hilary supporter. But its not just up to me. Still what I also find furiously exciting is that the country is finally being united. There isn't a sense of dread or ominous animosity. I think as citizens we are ready to move forward and start fixing what damage has occurred over the last eight years. Its also not just here, it seems the world has been electrified. With this last election we've reignited the world's faith that we can be the dynamic country we once were and still can be. I just love that this time around hope concurred, and rather than be squashed it has given room for more hope.
With the sweet comes the bitter too I'm afraid. It seems that bigotry has won out in California, and prop 8 has passed. I just can not understand some people's intolerance. Just because some horrid sad little man in Beverly Hills has a son who watches too much Gossip Girl in his opinion and is therefore deathly afraid his son might be a dun dun dun gay, he thinks that gives him the right to stop couples from living healthy fulfilling lives. People are not asking for some lofty extravagance; they're asking for the universal right to be happy. Not to turn the world on its ear and for you to attend, support, or participate in a wedding that you may or may not condone, but they are asking for the right to celebrate finding another soul they can share life with. Two people who want to commit to one another, to usher in years of happiness, to have a spouse in times when they need support, to celebrate anniversary's and birthdays, to access one anothers medical records, to always have a date for parities and holidays, to enjoy a set Friday night date night, and yes, perhaps get the chance to file their taxes jointly. Yet somehow this is offensive, its obscene. Frankly I'm just sad at the cowardness that this exposes of literally half (52%) of California's population. I am not expecting everyone to accept the fact that people are gay, although not accepting it isn't going to change anything, but it is that just everyone should be free to live life as they see fit so long as it hurts no other person. Religious furver is usually to blame, and yet those religions are free to practice however they deem necessary. Judgment of others seems to be human nature, but to intrude upon someone's life, to tell them how to be happy is foolish and uncaring. I am deeply sadden for those that are now in a state of uncertainy, for those who were searching for someone in hopes of one day coming together in the sometimes stressful and lavish ceremony that is a wedding, and for those who live their lives in such fear and hatred as they feel they must condemn everyone to the same fate. I will have hope for those this hurt, that one day families will celebrate the weddings of sons and daughters and that it will not matter how many brides or grooms are involved, but rather two people found and adoringly love one another.
